I started working in Corporate America when I was 17 years old. Four days after graduating from high school, I became the youngest full-time summer intern at one of the world’s top professional services firms. I haven’t really taken an ‘adulting’ break ever since.
I interned full-time every summer in college and even during the school year my senior year, when I interned in addition to holding down a part-time job. Once I graduated, I went right into a full-time role at the world’s top car company. I didn’t even take more than a few days off years later when I moved cross-country to NYC five years ago. And when I switched companies last year to work for the #1 fashion magazine, I took a total of 68 hours off in between.
Of course I’ve made time for vacations and two-week excursions across the world over the past 13 years of my professional career, but that was always with deadlines waiting and projects to be completed when I got back.
Well, last Friday, I bid adieu to Vogue/Teen Vogue after accepting a marketing opportunity at Google. I’m excited about this new professional pursuit but, to be honest, I might be even more excited that I was able to get 30 days off in between.
I’ve worked H-A-R-D over the years and it’s paid off. So I’m about to take full advantage of a little play time! Here’s what’s on my to-do list:
Spend time with my friends—from girls’ nights out, lunch dates and breakfast reunions, I’m making time to see all my favorite people.
Attend the ColorComm Conference in Miami with amazing women like Arianna Huffington, Hannah Bronfman and more. ColorComm is the national women’s organization I serve as the Executive Director for in addition to my 9-5, so I guess I’ll technically still be working in a way.
Explore some new pockets of NYC. Even after 5 years here, there’s still so much I haven’t seen and done.
Take a girls trip to Greece! My summer vacation to Santorini, Mykonos and Athens was planned months ago but, as fate would have it, it landed perfectly within this funemployment stretch. #winning
Exercise more. I’m getting back into my workout regimen and going for suns out guns out at least 4 days a week.
