I just have to let you in on my latest obsession. It’s where Sex And The City and #BlackGirlMagic intersect, and no I’m not talking about Girlfriends. I’m talking about “An African City” — a YouTube based web series about 5 fabulous black 30-something year old women living in Ghana. And it’s a MUST watch!
The series launched in 2014 and I have no idea why it took me so long to get put onto this masterpiece. Shout out to The Root’s “Young, Fabulous and Female” speaker series for introducing me to the lead star of the series, MaameYaa Boafa, last week. A few days after hearing MaameYaa speak at The Root event, and subsequently binge watching season 1 of An African City, I ran into her on the streets of Harlem. Turns out me and this Ghanaian beauty are neighbors! She was the sweetest, most down to earth beauty. So much so, that I almost asked her if I could bring over a bottle of wine and dissect all the season 1 goodness along with her…but one step at a time.
If the great, relatable story lines and gawgeous leading ladies of African City aren’t enough, the amazing African fashion surely will be. I was having serious closet-envy as I devoured season 1.
So, if you haven’t already, pause, right now, and watch Season 1/Episode 1 of An African City below. You can thank me later.
