I’ve been wearing protective styles exclusively for the past four months now—from two rounds of box braids to the crochet braid style I have now. I usually keep my protective styles in for an average of six weeks each. And, unless I’m swimming or sweating more that normal, I typically cleanse my protective styles once within that cycle.
While browsing Harlem boutique Vivrant Beauty, I recently came across a new line of products specifically for treating and cleansing protective styles called Under Hair Care by Girl + Hair. It boasts being the first hair product line formulated specifically for nourishing natural or relaxed hair while in protective styles.
The black-owned Under Hair Care line of products was sent my way to try out, and I must say I’m loving it!
There are three products in the line, all of which come in cute and super functional nozzle-tip bottles so you can apply directly to your scalp under braids.
- CLEANSE is Under Hair Care’s gentle sulfate, alcohol and paraben free shampoo that includes shea butter as well as tea tree and neem oil, which are known to treat and prevent itchy and flaky scalps. The consistency of the shampoo allows it to spread easily on your scalp without having to lather much. And I love the clean, fresh smell of this shampoo.
- NOURISH is a leave-in or wash-out conditioner. It has shea oil and cocoa butter, plus scalp soothing tea tree oil and neem oils as well. While I personally am not big on applying creamy conditioners when I’m wearing protective styles, I mixed some of this leave in conditioner with water in another bottle and used as my braid spray. It worked like a charm, with minimal build up.
- RESTORE is an oil based balm. It goes on like an oil, with the benefit of being just a teeny tiny bit thicker so it’s not running down your hair line as soon as you apply. Sunflower, olive and shea oils are among the main ingredients.
And, while this comb is not part of the Under Hair Care line, I’m enjoying using this Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother that my stylist sent me. Not only is it helpful for lightly lathering the products under my braids while cleansing, it also a terrific for soothing my head when my scalp gets to itching.
I’m really enjoying seeing so many products coming out for specifically for soothing, nourishing and cleansing protective styles. Would you try these products?
