One of the reasons I was attracted to NYC is because it’s the city of natural haired women. I’d venture to say that the majority of black women in New York wear their hair in its naturally curly state, and that the majority of men (black, white, and otherwise) adore them for it.
So it’s only expected that NYC would also come with a great variety of natural hair salons with stylist who are experts in helping us get the most out of our curlZ. One of those salons is Devachan in lower Manhattan. Since I chopped off my big curly fro a little over a year and half ago, I’ve been going to DevaChan every couple months to maintain my tapered curly style.
Devachan specializes in cutting curly hair of all types–from wavy to kinky. And they’re known for their own cutting method – the Deva Cut – which is done without wetting, straightening or tugging the hair like many salons do.
Instead, you come to your appointment with your hair dry, free of products, detangled and in its naturally curly state. The stylist (I swear by April…she’s amazingly skilled with the scissors) grabs curlZ one by one, cutting each one to achieve the overall look their clients want. Comparing my Deva Cuts to cuts at other salons that blew my hair out first, since I wear my hair exclusively curly, I feel like I was able to get the style I wanted with much more precision at Devachan than anywhere else.
