I was chatting with my good friend the other day telling her about the latest in Zoé’s dating adventures. I may not share them on this blog, but I have stories for days. Lately, though, despite having some good opportunities to go on dates and slide some new men my number, frankly, I just haven’t been feeling very motivated. This past year, more than ever, I’ve really come to realize that (excuse my French) I’m pretty f**king fly! And if a guy doesn’t seem like he’s going to appreciate all I am and what I bring to the table, or simply if he doesn’t intrigue me, I really just don’t feel like wasting my time. I’d much rather spend my energy on other things until such person does.
In my younger days, I would date for the sake of having something to do. But as I get closer to 30 and have more things pulling on my schedule and resources every day, I just can’t justify that anymore.
I was looking for a way to describe how I’ve felt lately when it comes to men, love and relationships, when I heard about Demetria Lucas’ new book Don’t Waste Your Pretty. And at her book launch party the other night, as I chatted with her about what lies in the pages of her latest project and what it stands for, I realized that what I’m doing in my love life can simply be described as NOT wasting my pretty.
Don’t Waste Your Pretty is more than just the title of the book. It’s a rule and way of living life. So what does it actually mean? According to Demetria, it actually has nothing to do with the way you look at all. It’s really about all the things we as women bring to the table that, all too often, we ourselves take for granted. Forget the men for a second. It starts with us. “Our energy, our time, our praying hands, our ability to listen,” Demetria says, “all of those things that are really valuable in dating and relationships that we give away to the wrong people.” We don’t even see the worth in them many times, so how is a man supposed to?
Don’t Waste Your Pretty is saying, don’t just give it away. Recognize the power you bring to the table as a woman, know what it’s worth and give it to the right person. And that person should also give all you’re giving right back to you.
Can I get an AMEN!!
She must know what she’s talking about, because, as we were chatting, I was gazing at the new hardware on her hand. Demetria is happily engaged and will be jumping the broom very soon.
So, even though don’t waste your pretty is not about what’s on the outside, the truth is we all feel more confident when we feel good from the inside out. So Demetria made sure we could get our ‘pretty’ on in the literal sense as well by partnering with Creme of Nature for her book tour. When I asked Demetria about her hair tips, she told me that the times her hair seems to get the most positive attention is, ironically, when she doesn’t do much else than throw a little conditioner in her hair, shake and go. A little effort can go a long way.
So, I headed on over to chat with Creme of Nature’s Director of Marketing Teneya Gholston, who is so glamorous and stunningly pretty herself, about some of their products and why they’re on the Don’t Waste Your Pretty boat. To sum it nicely, she said Demetria is an authentic, beautiful woman from the inside out who is committed to empowering women. And that’s what Creme of Nature stands for as well. A brand partnership done right!
I want to hear from you. How are you ladies out there committing to not wasting your pretty? Leave them in the comments sections below. Would love to hear.
