“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Over the past year, I learned that this popular phrase has as much to do with hair as it does with other aspects of life.
Last year, after two years of wearing my hair in what had become my signature look – a short curly tapered cut, often with red accents – I decided that maybe it was time for a change. It seemed that after such a long time with the same style, I needed to switch it up, re-invent my look a bit. So I embarked on a grow-out journey over 10 months, playing with protective styles and then finally settling on a longer curly do that I was planning to fully grow out.
Despite the fun I was having trying new styles, I began to realize more and more that I really LOVED and missed the short tapered cut I had once been known for. The style suited my personality to T, it was fuss-free and easy to maintain, it enhanced my best facial features…so why did I feel the need to permanently switch it up?
Through my grow-out journey, I learned that sometimes a certain style is your signature look not because you’re stuck in rut or in last year’s trend, but because it’s a look that really complements you. If a style really works for you, the passing of time alone doesn’t change that.
So at the beginning of the year, I paid a visit to my go-to stylists—my colorist, Tamari, and cutter, April—and re-adopted my trademark style.
