The weekend went by waaay to fast, as it always does when you’re having a great time. And mine was pretty amazing. On Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the #SmartBrownGirls Sip, Wit & Chat at Dumbo Sky in Brooklyn, where I was a featured panelist on a discussion about what it means to be a strong black woman in 2014.
Jouelzy, the popular YouTube personality who was the mastermind behind this event, truly outdid herself. The sold-out event was packed with dozens of beautiful, intelligent and engaging black women who were all delighted to be in a room full of like-minded women for some real-talk about matters facing us as #smartbrowngirls every day.

The #SmartBrownGirls movement is all about celebrating the diversity of women of color, without forcing us into any singular silo. Though we’re all strong black women, we are all different, we’re multi-faceted beings and we’re all unique in so many ways. So with this event, and through her YouTube page which has amassed over 115,000 followers and counting, Jouelzy wanted to encourage women to define their own pathway to success and to be confident in whatever life choices they make, taking care of all facets of self in the process.
I was joined on the panel by some pretty amazing women, including Kimberly N. Brown, Founder of ForHarriet.com; Janell Hazelwood, Associate Managing Editor for Black Enterprise and Jovian Zayne Irvin, Managing Director for Teach For America.

As we tackled the topic of the night, the gems of wisdom and knowledge being shared amongs us had me wishing I could live-tweet the whole thing. Thankfully a few of the women in the audience were and here’s just a little recap of some of the themes of the discussion:
