As much as I enjoy living in New York City, I’ll be the first person to say it can take a lot out of you. Between the long work hours, the crowds of people everywhere and the always-at-full-speed pace this city runs on, at the end of the week, sometimes I’m left feeling drained and completely tapped out. So on Saturday mornings I like to reset my mind and my body with a good workout, typically a yoga session.
A few months back I discovered a hidden little gem in my neighborhood, Harlem Wellness Center. Tucked away in a former school building, it’s a non-profit health and wellness center with a mission to improve the quality of lives of people in the local Harlem community, partly through affordable exercise classes. The facility is nice, the instructors are top-notch and, best of all, the classes are only $10 a piece!
The Saturday morning yoga classes with Crystal are my favorite. Prior to going to one of her classes, I was never a yoga regular. The other classes I tried around the city either made me feel like I wanted to fall asleep in the middle of the session because they were so slow or feel like I wanted to pass out because it was so freakin hot in the room. Crystal’s vinyasa flow classes are the perfect balance of mind centering, body toning and moderate stretching. Plus she’s a fabulous naturalista as well!
Head on over to the Harlem Welness Center website for their full class schedule. And if you see me in Saturday morning yoga, please say hi!
