Oh New York City in December…it’s nothing short of magical. The holiday season turns The Big Apple into a real-life winter wonderland, which makes December one of the best times to be here in my opinion. There’s no shortage of things to see and fun stuff to do. So whether you’re a resident of the city or just visiting, here are a few quintessential New York City activities you must do in December.
Oh and since I’m in the holiday spirit, make sure to read on to the end of this post for your chance to win something really, really good 😉
Check out the store holiday window displays. From Bergdorf to Barney’s, Lord & Taylor to Saks (shown above), this year they’re more extravagant than ever! Check out Refinery29’s list of some of the most spectacular ones this season here.
“Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree…” New York City’s Rockerfeller Center is where the most popular Christmas tree resides. Yes, it’ll be crowded, and you probably won’t get a selfie without 5 other people in too, but it’s so worth a visit. To miss the crowds, do like Kevin in Home Alone 2 and head over in the wee hours of the morning for the best view.
Go for a whirl at one of the winter ice skating rinks. The rink at Bryant Park happens to be my favorite because you can grab a cup of hot cocoa at one the pop-up holiday shops in park after. The perfect winter date! Then there’s the view at Wolman rink in Central Park (above), which can’t be beat. Here’s a list of the best winter ice skating rinks in and around the city.
Shop the holiday markets. No holiday trip to NYC is complete without a visit to at least one of the many specialty markets that pop up around this time. From Sugar Hill Market in Harlem to the Grand Central Shops, Union Square to Columbus Circle, these markets are great for festive browsing or those last minute present runs.
See a Broadway play…it’s one thing that New York is known for all year round. And if there’s one show that gets rave reviews from the most mature adults to the wee little ones alike, it’s THE LION KING ON BROADWAY. I was recently invited by Disney to see the play for its 18th anniversary….and it was so good that I cried. I took such pride in seeing so many great actors, singers and dancers of color on stage, the music made me want to chant with my ancestors, and the African-inspired costumes and makeup had my fashion and beauty loving self mesmerized the entire show. In fact, I liked it so much, I’m giving away a pair of tickets thanks to Disney!
